This rosary is crafted from sapphire, a variety of the mineral corundum, the same family as ruby and the second-hardest natural stone after diamond. While corundum can occur as an opaque, irregular black form once used in road paint (now replaced by synthetic corundum), the gem-quality varieties are prized for their vivid color; bright red stones are classified as ruby, while all other colors are known as sapphire. Sapphire's stone meanings are love and sincerity, and it is the birthstone for September. As the second-hardest stone after diamond, it is said to strengthen the bond between couples and loved ones.
