Alongside quartz, lapis lazuli is considered one of the oldest and most powerful natural stones known, revered across cultures around the world as a sacred stone believed to ward off evil spirits; it has been treasured since antiquity, worn by Sumerian and Mesopotamian civilizations as well as the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. It is also counted among the Seven Treasures of Buddhism, and in Japan has long been regarded, alongside quartz, as a stone of happiness. The lapis lazuli used here is of the very highest grade, showing exceptional vividness of color. Lapis lazuli is also the source material for ultramarine pigment, prized for its sea-like blue; the depth of blue in these beads is especially outstanding, polished to a beautiful finish by skilled hands.
