It has been treasured since antiquity, worn by the Sumerian and Mesopotamian civilizations as well as the pharaohs of ancient Egypt, and is counted among the Seven Treasures of Buddhism; in Japan it has long been regarded as a stone of happiness alongside quartz. This piece uses the highest-quality lapis lazuli, with an especially vivid saturation of blue. As lapis lazuli is the raw material for ultramarine pigment, its sea-blue color is a defining feature, and this piece's coloring is particularly striking, achieved through skilled polishing.
