About the Soto Zen sect

The shape of the beads of the Soto Zen sect is very similar to that of the beads of the Rinzai sect, but a distinctive feature of the Soto Zen sect is that the beads have metal rings running through them.
It is unclear why they are there, but one theory is that the rings represent Bodhidharma.
