Amethyst is also known as the birthstone of February, long said to help the wearer maintain a level head, which has made it a traditional favorite among lawyers, doctors, and similar professions. Its composed, gentle color suits any age, making this a strand that can comfortably be passed down across generations. Jodo sect prayer beads traditionally use a double-loop, interlinked strand: one loop of 27 beads and a second of 20 (or 40) beads, with 10 flat counting beads and 6 round counting beads attached. Unlike most other sects, the Jodo sect's formal strand does not use 108 main beads, but it can count further than any other style -- roughly 30,000 recitations for the men's strand and 60,000 for the women's strand.
