Takaoka Metalwork Sanyu Pattern Incense Burner

This medium-sized, rounded incense burner is decorated with the Sanyu (Three Friends of Winter) motif: pine, bamboo, and plum, plants long celebrated in East Asian art for enduring the cold winter months and symbolizing resilience, integrity, and steadfast friendship. The seidou-iro (bronze-tone) patina gives the surface a subdued, antique quality.

This piece is a work of Takaoka Metalwork (Takaoka Doki), a metal casting tradition centered in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, with a history of more than 400 years, crafted by artisan Natorigawa Masashi. Each burner is shaped using traditional sand-mold casting and finished by hand, with the seidou-iro patina applied to bring out a subdued, antique bronze tone in the copper surface.

How to Use

Fill the burner about two-thirds full with incense ash, then place lit incense cones, coils, or kneaded incense on top, or set glowing charcoal into the ash to enjoy fragrant woods.
