Takaoka Metalwork Natsume-Shaped Incense Burner

Modelled on the natsume, a rounded tea-caddy shape used in the Japanese tea ceremony, this incense burner takes its gently curved silhouette from that traditional tea utensil, giving it a simple, refined profile suited to both formal and everyday settings.

The piece is the work of Nousaku Yoshihide, a Takaoka craftsman, and is finished with a fired vermillion-bronze ("honyaki shudou-iro") glaze that gives the copper surface a warm, glowing reddish tone.

Takaoka, in Toyama Prefecture, has been a centre of cast metalwork for more than 400 years. The rich, fired finish on this piece reflects the specialised surface-colouring techniques that Takaoka artisans have refined over generations.

How to Use

Place a layer of ash in the bowl, then set incense sticks, cones, or lit charcoal into the ash to enjoy the fragrance as it burns.
