Takaoka Metalwork Mokaru Incense Burner
This incense burner takes its name from its mokaru form, a rounded basket-like silhouette inspired by traditional tools once used for gathering water plants. Cast in copper and finished in a deep tokushoku patina, it has a quiet, understated presence suited to a tea room, tokonoma alcove, or study.
This piece is a work of Takaoka Metalwork (Takaoka Doki), a metal casting tradition centered in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, with a history of more than 400 years, and was crafted by artisan Ohmori Takashi. Each burner is shaped using traditional sand-mold casting and hand-finished, with the tokushoku patina applied to bring out the depth and warmth of the copper surface.
How to Use
Fill the burner about two-thirds full with incense ash, then place lit incense cones, coils, or kneaded incense on top, or set glowing charcoal into the ash to enjoy fragrant woods.
