Ordinary cedar is generally said to live around 500 years, but Yakusugi refers only to cedar over 1,000 years old on Yakushima island (trees under 100 years are called "kosugi"); Yakushima itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Because living Yakusugi cannot be harvested, this strand is crafted only from fallen wood, prized for its unusually fine growth rings that deepen further in color the longer the beads are worn. It is paired with Dushan jade for the parent, facing, and top beads, a smooth, lustrous stone long treasured in China as one of its most prestigious jades. A limited piece, sized to shaku-shichi for the Rinzai sect.
