Men's prayer beads, Yakusugi, 12cm, Soto Zen, made with natural amber

Generally, it is said that the lifespan of a cedar tree is 500 years, but Yakusugi is much longer, and trees that are over 1000 years old are called Yakusugi, while those that are under 100 years old are called Kosugi.

As you may know, Yakusugi is a World Heritage Site.
We have made this World Heritage Yakusugi into a rosary.

Since Yakusugi can only be processed from fallen trees, we made these from fallen trees.

A characteristic of Yakusugi is that it has very fine annual rings, which attracts viewers.

Also, as is the case with all trees, the more you use it, the deeper the color becomes.

I think that you will grow to love it more and more if you add a deep color to the fine pattern of Yakusugi's annual rings.

The rosary shown here was made with natural amber as the top and main beads.
Natural amber has a clear color and excellent internal transparency.

★About the Soto Zen sect

The shape of the Soto Zen rosary is very similar to that of the Rinzai sect, but a distinctive feature of the Soto Zen sect is that the rosary has a metal ring running through it.
It is unclear why it is there, but one theory is that this ring represents Bodhidharma.
