A strand made from Japanese cherry wood, prized for how well it settles into the hand and how its color deepens noticeably with continued use. Like all wood prayer beads, it grows more interesting and richer in character the more it is used, becoming a strand the wearer grows increasingly attached to over time. Here it is finished with black onyx on the top and parent beads. Black onyx is simple yet striking, drawing the eye with quiet confidence; its deep black pairs beautifully with mourning attire and lends the wearer's complexion a dignified, solemn look. Made up in the formal Hokke style used in Nichiren sect practice: the parent bead carries three tassels on one side, and ten counting beads (kyoshu-dama) track recitations of the Nichiren daimoku (Namu Myoho Renge Kyo). Nichiren sect followers commonly carry this full formal strand.
