Its name traces to two possible origins: the Chara River basin in Siberia where it was first found, or the Russian word 'charo,' meaning to charm or seduce. Charoite was officially recognized as its own mineral in 1978, following years of research by a mineralogist. The stone is characterized by its opaque purple coloring, related to sugilite in appearance, though its purple and white marbled patterns blend together as though brushed by hand, creating a uniquely mysterious visual effect.
