Blue amber is considered among the rarest of all amber varieties. Its rarity comes from an unusual optical effect: under ordinary light the beads appear a warm golden color, but exposed to even a small amount of ultraviolet light, they shift to a vivid blue depending on the angle -- an effect most visible against a black background, making it a striking choice to pair with mourning attire. Blue amber is found only in the Dominican Republic, and closures of the mines that produce it have made the material increasingly scarce. Dominican amber itself is fossilized resin from the Hymenaea tree, roughly 2,500 to 3,000 years in the making, that hardens under natural ultraviolet exposure into this shifting cobalt blue. This particular strand also contains a small natural insect inclusion, a genuinely rare and valuable feature almost never seen in amber that comes to market. As a fully natural piece, some surface marks may be visible near the bead holes. Limited to a single piece.
