This limited-edition rosary is generously crafted from high-quality black persimmon in the traditional Rinzai-sect style. Black persimmon is a variety of Japanese persimmon known for a clearer, more distinctive grain pattern than that of ebony or rosewood, the classic 'karaki' hardwoods; its status as a premium material comes from its scarcity, as only about one in a hundred persimmon trees felled yields wood with this striking black patterning from a natural mutation. Prized for crafts such as fine tea canisters and ornamental pieces for its hardness and rich luster, black persimmon lends these beads a refined, calm color. Rinzai-sect prayer beads traditionally consist of 108 beads; even among practitioners, few own a formal rosary of this kind, and it is not typically held during zazen meditation. Its shape closely resembles the rosary style used by the Soto sect, but without the connecting rings.
