Jindai cedar is a rare, semi-fossilized wood formed when cedar trees were buried under volcanic ash thousands of years ago and preserved without decaying, prized as a material for luxury architectural fittings and fine crafts. Its coloring develops in stages over the roughly 2,000 years it takes to form: a freshly split log first reveals a pale, egg-yolk yellow, which turns blue on contact with air before finally settling into the calm gray-brown seen here. Its name, meaning 'sleeping since the age of the gods,' reflects the way this wood seems to carry a quiet trace of life even after thousands of years underground, making it a genuinely mysterious material. This piece was made possible only by the chance circumstances of an ancient natural disaster, and follows the formal Soto-sect rosary style.
