Lion Lid Incense Burner

This natsume-shaped (tea-caddy-shaped) incense burner is topped with a seated shishi (guardian lion) finial, a motif traditionally used to protect the space and ward off misfortune. The rounded body is wrapped in a hand-engraved bamboo pattern, a plant long admired in Japan for its strength, flexibility, and steady growth through every season.

Cast in solid copper by Takaoka artisans, the piece is left in a natural copper finish that lets the crisp lines of the bamboo engraving stand out.

Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, has been a centre of cast metalwork for over 400 years. Local craftsmen continue to combine traditional sand-mould casting with hand engraving to create incense burners that balance decorative detail with everyday practicality.

How to Use

Add a layer of ash to the bowl, then set incense sticks, cones, or lit charcoal into the ash to burn.
