Takaoka Metalwork Owl Incense Burner

This incense burner takes the form of a round-eyed owl, one of the more playful figures found in Takaoka copperware. The Gold finish depicts a single owl on its own base, while the two stand versions present a slightly slimmer owl silhouette perched above a decorative stand.

This piece is a product of Takaoka copperware (Takaoka Doki), a metal casting tradition centered in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, for over 400 years. The With Stand 2 finish is the work of Takaoka artisan Sotaro Saigusa.

Design Variations

• Gold — cast iron owl in a gold-toned finish, resting on its own oval base with lid (11.2 x 10 x 9.5cm)
• With Stand 1 — cast iron owl on a matching stand, with a wider mouth opening (9 x 9 x 11.5cm, mouth diameter approx. 6.4cm)
• With Stand 2 — cast aluminum owl on an oval stand, the work of artisan Sotaro Saigusa (10cm diameter x 12cm height)

How to Use

Place a layer of incense ash inside the burner, then set a lit incense cone or a piece of incense charcoal on top of the ash. The lid can be closed partially to let fragrant smoke drift out gradually through the owl's features.
