Takaoka Metalwork Incense Burner
Takaoka Metalwork Incense Burner
This flat, round incense burner is decorated with hand-carved chokin engraving depicting motifs of waves paired with cranes, plovers, or pine, evoking scenes from classic Japanese design.
This piece is a product of Takaoka copperware (Takaoka Doki), a metal casting tradition centered in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, for over 400 years. The Wave Crane (burnt bronze color) and Pine (old hand color) finishes are the work of Takaoka artisan Yoshihide Nohsaku, while the Wave Plover design features hand-carved chokin engraving of plovers in flight.
Design Variations
- Burnt Bronze Color, Wave Crane — a burnt bronze finish with a wave and crane motif, the work of artisan Yoshihide Nohsaku
