Kazuru Incense Burner

A flock of cranes is chased in intricate detail across the entire surface of this incense burner, creating a lavish, celebratory pattern. The lid is crowned with a turtle motif, pairing the crane and turtle together as one of Japan's most auspicious combinations.

This piece is the work of Kosai Sano, a traditional craft artisan working in the Takaoka Metalwork tradition of Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. A skilled engraver hand-chases the pattern directly into the cast body, then applies gold, silver, and plating according to the artisan's own sensibility, transforming a plain casting into a vividly detailed work of art. The body is cast in zinc alloy and finished with silver plating.

How to Use

Fill the bowl with ash, then place a lit incense cone, stick, or piece of charcoal on top of the ash to enjoy the fragrance.
