This incense burner brings together the three lucky charms of the Japanese saying "Ichi-Fuji, Ni-Taka, San-Nasu" (一富士二鵰三茶子) — first Mt. Fuji, second a hawk, third an eggplant. According to folklore, dreaming of these three things on the first night of the New Year (hatsuyume) is a sign of especially good fortune for the year ahead, making this piece a popular motif for celebratory and New Year gifts.
This piece is a work of Takaoka copperware (高岡銅器), a metal casting tradition passed down in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, for over 400 years. It was crafted by the artisan Masaharu (正晴) in copper, finished with a traditional dark patina known as tokushoku that gives the surface its deep, antique tone.
How to Use
Place a layer of ash in the burner, then set a stick of incense, an incense cone, or lit charcoal on top of the ash to enjoy the fragrance.
