A pair of cranes take flight above a pine tree on the body of this incense burner, an auspicious pairing that symbolizes longevity and good fortune. The lid is shaped in the form of a seated lion (shishi), giving the piece its distinctive silhouette and name.

This piece is a product of Takaoka Metalwork, a traditional craft with over 400 years of history in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. A skilled engraver hand-chases the cranes and pine into the cast copper body, then applies gold and silver plating according to the artisan's own sensibility, transforming a plain casting into a vividly detailed work of art well suited for display as well as everyday incense burning.

How to Use
