Tobiume offers a mellow, classical aroma built around the character of Tani agarwood. Its gentle depth conveys a warm and familiar sense of tradition.
The name “Tobiume” comes from a well‑known legend connected to the scholar and poet Sugawara no Michizane. On the day he was exiled from the capital in 901, he composed a farewell poem for the plum tree he cherished in his garden:
“When the eastern wind blows,
let your fragrance drift to me, O plum blossoms.
Forget not the spring, even though your master is gone.”
According to the tale, the beloved plum tree later flew from Kyoto to Michizane’s side in Dazaifu, becoming the “Flying Plum” that has been passed down in story for over a thousand years. Inspired by this legend and its fragrant imagery, the incense was named “Tobiume.”
This blend incorporates aloeswood, sandalwood, clove, cinnamon bark, costus root, and other natural aromatics that have been treasured since ancient times—including ingredients recorded in the Shosoin archives and those celebrated in classical literature. Enhanced with Baieido’s traditional craftsmanship, Tobiume brings these rare materials together into a refined fragrance that feels both historic and elegantly modern.
Enjoy a scent that evokes the elegance of the old capital and the timeless grace of the plum blossom.
