Agate is most often found in large masses within volcanic rock, its color and banding shaped by trace minerals such as iron during formation. It has long been associated with intellect, longevity, and health, said in folklore to give courage to the wearer and help build smooth relationships with others. Agate occurs in a wide range of colors and patterns -- black striped, red, orange striped, and more -- and this strand uses a clear, glossy blue agate that gives the wearer an added touch of elegance. Rinzai sect formal strands traditionally use 108 main beads; while few lay practitioners today carry the full formal strand, and prayer beads are not typically held during zazen meditation, the style closely resembles Soto Zen sect strands but omits the metal ring found on those.
