Holly (hiiragi) has long been associated with warding off misfortune and inviting good fortune, valued since ancient times as an auspicious plant believed to keep evil spirits at bay. In the West it is likewise a well-loved plant, carrying the flower meaning of "domestic happiness." Like all wood prayer beads, it grows more interesting and richer in character the more it is used, becoming a strand the wearer grows increasingly attached to over time. Here it is finished with Dushan jade on the top and parent beads; Dushan jade has a smooth, glossy texture long prized in China as a noted variety of jade. Made up in the formal Hokke style used in Nichiren sect practice: the parent bead carries three tassels on one side, and ten counting beads (kyoshu-dama) track recitations of the Nichiren daimoku (Namu Myoho Renge Kyo). Nichiren sect followers commonly carry this full formal strand, with its five tassels said by various accounts to represent the human body.
