Yakusugi are ancient cedars from Yakushima, a UNESCO World Heritage site, generally defined as cedar trees over 1,000 years old (younger trees are called "kosugi"). As the forest is protected, only wood from naturally fallen trees may be used. Yakusugi is prized for its unusually fine, dense grain, which deepens in color and character the longer it is used -- fitting for a gift wishing long life to an older family member. Finished here with popular brown crystal (smoky quartz), a stone found mainly in Brazil, the United States, and Madagascar, this piece uses a slightly lighter shade of brown crystal than usual for a gentler impression.
