Skulls have long been used as talismans, worn or displayed on the belief that presenting something fearsome to the outside world wards off evil spirits – a tradition still visible today, for example on doorways in parts of China. Here, each skull is carefully hand-carved into star bodhi seed, the fruit of a bodhi tree found on Hainan Island, China. The name comes from the pattern on each seed: countless small dark specks resembling stars, together with a single larger mark left by the stem resembling the moon, giving each seed the appearance of a miniature night sky. Star bodhi seed has long been associated with the idea of the universe, and by extension with the Buddhist cosmos, lending these beads a naturally mystical quality that has made them a favored material for prayer beads. Each seed is hand-carved individually by skilled artisans, giving the finished piece a warmth and character unique to handmade work.
