Starry Moon Bodhi seed is the fruit of a tree found on Hainan Island, China. The name "Starry Moon" comes from the appearance of the seed itself, covered in countless small spots. Among those spots is one larger spot — a mark left where the seed was picked from its stem, deeper and larger than the other spots. The many small spots are said to represent the stars in the night sky, while the single large spot represents the moon — hence the name "Starry Moon" for a bodhi seed with black spots on a white surface. Starry Moon Bodhi seeds are also said to represent the Buddhist world, since the seeds have long been likened to the stars and moon of the night sky, said to represent the universe, believed to be the world of the Buddha.
