Starry Moon Bodhi seeds, gathered on Hainan Island in China, take their name from the many small dark spots on the seed's surface (the "stars") and the single larger mark where the seed once joined its stem (the "moon"). Over time, natural oils in the seed bring out a beautiful amber sheen with wear, and the seeds are said to represent the Buddhist cosmos.
