Starry bodhi seed takes its name from the countless small dark spots covering its surface, likened to stars in the night sky, with the single larger mark from the stem said to represent the moon. Together they are traditionally read as a symbol of the universe, the world of the Buddha. Finished here with smoky quartz for the Rinzai sect, whose formal prayer beads traditionally number 108 beads and, unlike the Soto sect style, have no metal ring.
