Men's Prayer Beads, Jindai Cedar & Brown Quartz, Rinzai Sect, 2-Shaku Size
Men's Prayer Beads, Jindai Cedar & Brown Quartz, Rinzai Sect, 2-Shaku Size
Jindai cedar refers to cedar wood that fell and became buried underground or underwater – sometimes due to volcanic eruptions, floods, or landslides – where it remained for hundreds to thousands of years before being unearthed. Over that long span underground, the wood slowly absorbs minerals from the surrounding earth, developing a distinctive grain with dark gray-to-black streaks running through the original cedar tone. Because Jindai cedar can only be obtained when such wood happens to be unearthed, it is an extremely limited and valuable material, prized for its fine, striking grain pattern. As with any wood, its color deepens further with use, so its distinctive grain only grows more captivating over time. Here, the top and parent beads are made of brown quartz, valued for its smooth, glossy texture and calming presence. This piece follows the formal Rinzai-sect style, based on a standard count of 108 beads; even among temple parishioners, few own a full formal set, and practitioners do not hold them during zazen meditation. The design closely resembles Soto-sect prayer beads but without the metal ring. Only one piece is available.
