This men's prayer beads set is made from green sandalwood (ryokutan), also known as the "tree of life" or "green phoenix" wood. The trunk and branches are not naturally green; the color develops gradually on contact with air, which is likely how the wood earned its name, and it deepens further the longer the beads are worn. A relative of the same family as ebony and rosewood, it is prized as a lightweight, popular hardwood. It is paired with tiger's eye for the parent and four-heaven beads, long called the "eye of the god" stone and said to sharpen focus, invite success, and guard against misfortune, finished with a hamanashi tassel for the Nichiren sect.
