Black persimmon is a variety of Japanese persimmon wood, distinguished among fine hardwoods such as ebony and rosewood by its especially vivid, clearly defined grain. The wood earns its reputation as a premium material because of its rarity: only about one in a hundred persimmon trees felled yields wood with this dramatic black patterning, a probability that has long made it prized for fine crafts such as luxury tea caddies and ornamental objects, thanks to its hardness and rich luster. This piece has been finished with genuine lacquer, bringing out the color and grain of the black persimmon even more vividly than an unfinished piece. Only one piece is available.
