Burmese jade has been treasured by the Japanese since the Jomon period, when it was carved into magatama beads, and its rarity has earned it the name "Emerald of the East," long prized as a noble ornamental stone. Jade is found and valued around the world in forms such as Indian jade, Itoigawa jade from Japan, and Burmese jade from Myanmar. The stone used here is genuine natural jadeite from Myanmar, in a particularly fine shade. Lavender jade takes its purple hue from trace iron and titanium and, like black jade, is highly prized and increasingly difficult to find. This hard jadeite variety is popular among women's prayer beads at Kohgen and is often sold out there -- here it appears in generously sized beads for a men's strand, in an uncommon color for prayer beads that is striking without being showy.
