Amber wood is the broadleaf tree native to the Dominican Republic whose resin, over thousands of years, hardens into blue amber. Amber wood itself has antiviral properties and naturally resists mold and fungus, earning it a reputation as a "tree that wards off evil." Like blue amber, it grows naturally in only a handful of regions, making prayer beads made from it extremely rare. This strand pairs amber wood with recomposed mother-of-pearl amber, an unusual form of amber containing genuine abalone shell -- fragments of iridescent shell scattered through the amber, catching the light with the same shimmer long associated in folklore with the halo of Buddha. Abalone shell has for that reason long been treasured as an auspicious material. The nacre technique used here is the same one prized in high-end acoustic guitar inlay work, requiring considerable skill; the shell fragments are set into the amber during the process of compressing small amber granules into a larger bead.
