Ordinary cedar is said to live around 500 years, but Yakusugi refers only to cedar trees on Yakushima over 1,000 years old (trees under that age are called kosugi). Yakushima is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and these prayer beads are crafted from that same protected forest -- specifically from naturally fallen timber, the only wood permitted for use. Yakusugi is known among woods for its unusually fine, tightly packed growth rings, a detail that draws the eye. Like all wood beads, it deepens in color and richness the more it is used, and the fine grain paired with that growing depth of color makes for a strand that only grows more appealing with time. Here it is paired with agate from Madagascar, prized for its beautiful natural banding. A limited piece; the exact strand pictured will be the one shipped. This is the cord-tassel version.
