Jindai cedar is a rare and mysterious material formed when wood was buried in volcanic ash thousands of years ago and, rather than decaying, gradually became semi-fossilized over as much as 2,000 years. Freshly split, the wood is egg-yellow; on contact with air it turns blue, and finally settles into a calm ash-brown tone. Normally reserved for fine architectural decoration and craftwork, here it has been cut into beads and hand-finished by Kyoto artisans into men's prayer beads. This piece pairs Jindai cedar with citrine, long favored by the upper classes as a stone of fortune said to bring prosperity in business, draw people together, and help wealth flow smoothly. It is also the birthstone of November, prized for its bright, energizing color.
