Men's Prayer Beads, Jindai Cedar, 22 Beads, Malachite Finish, With Prayer Bead Pouch, Limited Edition

Jindai cedar is a rare and mysterious material formed when wood was buried in volcanic ash thousands of years ago and, rather than decaying, gradually became semi-fossilized -- a transformation that can take up to 2,000 years to produce its characteristic quiet color. Freshly split, the wood is egg-yellow; on contact with air it turns blue, and finally settles into a calm ash-brown tone, as if still carrying the breath of life after thousands of years. Normally used in fine architectural decoration and craftwork, here it has been cut into beads and hand-finished one by one by Kyoto artisans into men's prayer beads. Wood beads such as this become more comfortable in the hand and richer in color and luster the more they are used, and unlike stone, they are notably light and never feel cold to the touch. This piece pairs Jindai cedar with malachite, a beautiful green stone with characteristic banding, long cherished as a charm against evil and said to bring calm to the wearer's mind.
