Blue amber is considered extremely rare among ambers, prized for the way it glows blue under ultraviolet light. Under normal light these beads appear yellow, but even a trace of UV exposure causes them to shift to blue depending on the angle – an effect especially striking against dark fabric, making them a captivating accent when worn with mourning attire. Blue amber is found only in the Dominican Republic, and supply has become increasingly limited as mines there have closed. It forms from the fossilized resin of the Hymenaea tree, a broadleaf species, over roughly 2,500 to 3,000 years, and the way its color shifts subtly with the light and viewing angle has long made it a stone admired for both its presence and its mystery. Only one piece is available.
