Black persimmon is a variety of Japanese persimmon wood, distinguished among fine hardwoods such as ebony and rosewood by its especially vivid, clearly defined grain. The wood earns its reputation as a premium material because of its rarity: only about one in a hundred persimmon trees felled yields wood with this dramatic black patterning, a probability that has long made it prized for fine crafts such as luxury tea caddies and ornamental objects, thanks to its hardness and rich luster. This piece is made generously from high-quality black persimmon, giving it a calm, dignified color. This piece follows the formal Rinzai-sect style, based on a standard count of 108 beads; even among temple parishioners, few own a full formal set, and practitioners do not hold them during zazen meditation. The design closely resembles Soto-sect prayer beads but without the metal ring.
