A striking and unusual piece: Peruvian lava stone carved with a floral motif. Lava stone is naturally dense and heavy, but the openwork (sukashi-bori) carving technique used here keeps the beads comparatively light, and the cord can be glimpsed through the gaps in the pattern. The secondary beads use Tian Yan ("Heaven's Eye") Bodhi seed with matching floral carving, in a similar tone but different texture for subtle visual interest -- an understated design with a playful touch.
