This rosary pairs the classic starry moon bodhi seed with compressed amber. Starry moon bodhi seed takes its name from the countless small dark specks across each seed, said to resemble stars in the night sky, and the single larger mark left by the stem, likened to the moon; since ancient times the seed has been believed to represent the universe, and by extension the world of the Buddha, a meaning reinforced by the tradition that the Buddha attained enlightenment beneath a bodhi tree. (Many varieties of bodhi seed are used in prayer beads beyond the starry moon type, including dragon-eye, phoenix-eye, and tiger's-eye bodhi seed, among others.) Compressed amber is created by hardening small fragments of natural amber – formed over tens of millions of years from tree resin – into larger beads; this allows the beauty of amber's warm, glowing color to be enjoyed at a more accessible price than a bead carved from a single large piece of raw amber. This piece follows the Rinzai-sect rosary style. Only one piece is available.
