This variety of amber contains fragments of abalone shell embedded within it, creating a sparkling, iridescent effect as the shell catches the light. The seven-hued luster of abalone shell has long been likened to the halo of the Buddha, making it a cherished lucky charm since ancient times; the same mother-of-pearl technique is also prized in high-end acoustic guitar craftsmanship, where abalone inlay requires exceptional skill to apply to frets and bodies. This piece is created by compressing small amber fragments and embedding shell pieces during the shaping of the larger beads – a process known as compressed amber, which, compared to natural amber, is more affordable but shows fine internal texture rather than the fully clear, transparent quality of natural amber. Only one piece of this particularly rare mother-of-pearl amber is available.
