Jindai cedar is a rare and mysterious material formed when wood was buried in volcanic ash thousands of years ago and, rather than decaying, gradually became semi-fossilized over as much as 2,000 years. Freshly split, the wood is egg-yellow; on contact with air it turns blue, and finally settles into a calm ash-brown tone. Normally reserved for fine architectural decoration and craftwork, here it has been cut into beads and hand-finished by Kyoto artisans into men's prayer beads. Wood beads such as this grow more comfortable in the hand and richer in color and luster the more they are used, and are notably light and never cold to the touch compared to stone. This piece pairs Jindai cedar with lapis lazuli, regarded alongside quartz as one of the oldest and most powerful of all power stones, long revered across many cultures as a sacred stone that wards off evil.
