Tiger jasper is a stone originating from Africa, also known as tiger jade. While most jasper is red, this variety is a distinctive dark brown, often appearing nearly black, referred to as tiger jasper. Its beautiful mottled pattern resembles tiger amber, and the mixture of various minerals within gives it a sparkling glimmer, caused by titanium content that catches the light beautifully as the bead is turned. It is also notably heavy due to its higher iron content. The surface has a slightly rugged texture, a result of the iron content making the stone difficult to cut smoothly, and this texture only adds to its beauty.
