Takaoka Metalwork Kikkousukashi Incense Burner

An openwork tortoiseshell lattice pattern (kikkou-sukashi) wraps the body of this incense burner, its pierced hexagonal motif long regarded in Japan as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. The pierced design also allows light and warmth from the incense to filter gently through the surface.

This piece is a product of Takaoka Metalwork, a traditional craft with over 400 years of history in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. The body is cast in copper and finished in a kodeiro (antique-tone) coloring by the region's artisans.

How to Use

Fill the bowl with ash, then place a lit incense cone, stick, or piece of charcoal on top of the ash to enjoy the fragrance.
