Takaoka Metalwork Seven Lucky Gods Six-Sided Matori Incense Burner
The six-sided body of this tall incense burner is divided into framed panels ("matori", a partitioned-window design) depicting the Shichifukujin, the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese folk belief, each associated with a different form of good fortune such as wealth, longevity, and wisdom.
The piece is the work of Nousaku Yoshihide, a Takaoka craftsman, and is finished with a lacquer-plated coating that gives the copper surface a smooth, lustrous, dark finish while protecting the fine relief of each deity.
Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, has been a centre of cast metalwork for more than 400 years. The six-panel matori construction and detailed figurative relief on this piece are characteristic of the meticulous hand-finishing techniques for which Takaoka workshops are known.
How to Use
Add a layer of ash to the bowl, then place incense sticks, cones, or lit charcoal in the ash to burn.
