Takaoka Metalwork Auspicious Shochikubai Incense Burner

Shochikubai unites pine (matsu), bamboo (take), and plum (ume), the "Three Friends of Winter" that remain green or bloom through the cold season. Together they form one of the most celebrated auspicious motifs in Japanese art, symbolizing resilience, integrity, and renewal. This incense burner is cast in alloy and finished with a silver plating that gives its relief detailing a bright, formal shine well suited to New Year and celebratory display.

The piece is made using Takaoka copperware (Takaoka Doki) techniques, a metal casting tradition practiced in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, for more than 400 years. Artisans there pour molten metal into hand-formed molds and hand-finish each casting, giving Takaoka metalwork its characteristic weight, texture, and durability.

How to Use

Place a layer of ash in the burner, then set an incense cone, stick, or piece of charcoal on top to burn.
