Haisokou (Agastache rugosa) is a traditional incense material known for its cool, vivid aromatic character and strong, clearly defined fragrance.

Haisokou is prepared from the dried roots of Agastache rugosa, a perennial herb belonging to the mint family. While the same plant is known as kakkou when referring to its leaves and stems above ground, the underground root portion is distinguished as haisokou within incense traditions. This distinction reflects differences in aroma and usage.

The plant is native to China and is also cultivated in regions such as Indonesia and Malaysia. The roots are carefully dried and processed to preserve their distinctive aromatic profile for incense use.

As an incense material, haisokou is recognized for its pronounced and refreshing scent, characterized by a cooling sensation and a slightly mature, spicy nuance. Compared with kakkou derived from the aerial parts of the plant, haisokou generally presents a stronger and more concentrated aromatic presence.

Because of its intensity and clarity, haisokou is commonly incorporated into incense blends where a clearly defined aromatic accent is desired, including formulations intended for stick incense. It is typically used as a complementary element rather than as a sole base material.
