Four Divine Beasts Incense Burner

This incense burner is decorated with the Four Divine Beasts (Shishin) of East Asian tradition: the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise, each guarding one of the four cardinal directions. The design is highlighted with a sashi-mekki (partial plating) accent finish that brings out the fine detail of each figure against the copper body.

This piece is a work of Takaoka Metalwork (Takaoka Doki), a metal casting tradition centered in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, with a history of more than 400 years. Each burner is shaped using traditional sand-mold casting and finished by hand, with the sashi-mekki plating applied selectively to accent the relief details.

How to Use

Fill the burner about two-thirds full with incense ash, then place lit incense cones, coils, or kneaded incense on top, or set glowing charcoal into the ash to enjoy fragrant woods.
