This rosary is crafted from the rare 'dragon-eye' bodhi seed, a prized find for collectors of unusual materials. In Chinese tradition, one-eyed creatures were long called phoenixes, giving rise to the term 'phoenix-eye bodhi seed' for bodhi fruit that shows a single visible eye. When that single eye naturally develops into three, the fruit becomes what is known as dragon-eye bodhi seed – three-eyed creatures having been called dragons – and this transformation occurs in only about 20 to 30 percent of phoenix-eye bodhi fruit, making it a genuinely rare variation. Rather than being rounded and polished, the dragon-eye bodhi seed used here is left close to its natural form, so its rough, textured surface conveys the character of the raw fruit; with continued use, the seed's natural oils gradually bring out a beautiful amber sheen that deepens and develops uniquely over time. The main beads are accented with Indian jade, a stone long familiar to the Japanese and valued for its calming presence; the deep green of the jade set against the rich brown of the dragon-eye bodhi seed creates a refined, elegant contrast.
